Artist Captures Steam Train Images

The works of Frank Mitchell

In my quest for the best steam train pictures from around the world, I came across Frank Mitchell, known as one of the top 20 train artists in the world. Using his artistic  license, Frank has rendered many photos of popular railway spots without unnecesary overhead wiring and other distractions.

Frank was born at Woy Woy, not far from where I now live. Back before 1961, steam locomotives hauled most of the trains on the line. At that lime it was electrified. I was 3 when I first travelled over this section of line, and although I remember it, I didn’t have a camera!

The stretch of railway line includes the Hawkesbury River Bridge, one of the most famous in NSW. In recent months there has been some controversy about the stability of this bridge. On one occasion I walked almost the entire length to get a shot of 3820 heading north from Sydney for the very last time.

Frank Mitchell was born in Sydney in 1937 and grew up at WoyWoy. He has lived in Sydney and along the N.S.W. Coast, and is now at Corindi Beach, just north of Coffs Harbour.
Frank studied at the National Art School in Sydney. He later taught art and has held over 50 successful exhibitions of his own works. He generally uses oils but also does some paintings in acrylic. Frank’s earlier works focused on the Australian landscape and now he has broadened his portfolio to include steam train paintings.
He has developed a reputation and success as a first-class painter in this area, painting from black and white photos found in early railway magazines and books. In some cases, scenes are recomposed, giving the subject originality and life. Frank’s paintings include steam trains still operating in Australia.

Here is a video of another railway artist, this time from the UK.
